It’s great to have a Children’s Author as our Writer of the Week during Children’s Week here on Mrs A!

My life journey has taken me from being a nature-loving child, to training to be a paediatric nurse, to a career as a soil scientist and, finally, to life as a children’s author.  An accident in my 20s ended my time as a paediatric nurse.  Years of inability to work were devastating, but sowed the seeds of writing when I would scribble daily.  I found this cathartic, but lacked the confidence to realise that I might have talent.  Two degrees later I embarked on life as a university lecturer in soil science. Here I had a reputation for being a very good technical writer.  I loved this, but felt that there was something missing.  That ‘something’ was creative writing, that act of using my imagination to weave tales.

I am, and have always been, passionate about the natural world and wanting children to engage with it. It is probably not surprising that elements of this underpin my writing.  Thanks to support from TeamAuthorUK I took the plunge in 2017 and indie published my first children’s picture book, ‘Rock on Barney’. It was an Amazon best seller which motivated me the following year to indie publish my next book, an early chapter book ‘The Adventures of Markus Moldewarp’.  That too was an Amazon best seller.

I love visiting schools and libraries to talk about my characters of Barney the buzzard, Markus the mole and his sidekick, Quigley the Wriggley.  As an environmental scientist I am able to combine my passion for the environment with my love for encouraging children to write creatively.  I was Author-in-Residence at a Liverpool school for a year, an experience that was totally fulfilling.  I am now working on a Middle Grade novel which, once again, has a strong environmental focus.
