Book Review – Dear Mr Pop Star by Derek & Dave Philpott

This is such an unusual book it takes a few pages to understand what’s happening – and then to get your head around whether or not the letters (and their responses) are real – but they are! I had a good chuckle reading the book and it was a great book to dip in and out of so fits in with short spurts of time you may have as each song is a complete unit. I have to admit that although I think of myself as well versed musically, there were a number of letters that were lost on me as I didn’t know the song, or sometimes even the band, they were referring to. What is interesting is that I started to want to know and listening to the songs from the book. A great addition to a future edition would be a Spotify list to help out…

The letters and responses are fun to read and often surprising, they run to a theme so although the letters become predictable the responses never are which is a gives the book great originality. It’s a very unique experience to read, and if you love music or are a ‘certain age’ you will enjoy the reminiscing and possibly dust off a few LP’s too.
